To non-hunters, it is very counter intuitive to think that regulated hunting actually contributes to healthier animal populations, local economies and conservation overall. Particularly in Africa, there is a ton of data that shows the benefits of hunting; and the detrimental effects of banning hunting.
Many of us know, or have experienced the vitriol and zealousness of anti-hunters but no sector of hunting gets targeted more than “trophy hunting”. To many non-hunters, meat hunting is acceptable; trophy hunting is not. The notion of killing an animal for its antlers. horns or hide is distasteful at best, evil at worst. As society becomes more and more urbanized, we become more and more removed from the true realities of nature. As we more and more become city dwellers, I believe we understand less and less the circle of life. If you even eat meat at all, it comes on a styrofoam tray in a store – it is easy to distance yourself from the life and eventual death of a chicken – to arrive at that plate of wings.
Hats off to https://safariclub.org/ for helping put together this video. A thoughtful response to a contentious and oft misunderstood topic.
